Try a screen-free Sunday as a family now and then

Weekends often end up filled with screens just as much as weekdays, whether it's catching up on shows, scrolling through social media or simply reaching for the phone out of habit. A single day set aside as properly screen-free can feel like a genuinely different kind of day for the whole family.

The idea doesn't need to be complicated or strict to be worthwhile. Even one Sunday now and then, chosen in advance rather than decided on the spot, gives everyone a clear sense of what the day is meant to look like before it even begins.

Plan the day around something else

Choose a Sunday that isn't already full of other commitments, so the day can genuinely be shaped around spending time together rather than screens. Planning a specific activity in advance, even something simple, makes the day easier to look forward to for everyone involved.

Agree as a family beforehand on what counts as screen-free, since some exceptions, such as taking photos or checking the time, may still be reasonable. Having this agreed in advance avoids any disagreement partway through the day about what was actually meant.

Expect the first attempt to feel a little strange, particularly if screens are normally a constant part of the household routine. Most families find it becomes easier and more natural the more often it's tried, rather than something that needs to work perfectly the very first time.

A screen-free Sunday doesn't need to become a strict weekly rule to be worthwhile. Trying it now and then is often enough to notice a genuine change of pace, and to remind the whole family what a day without screens can actually feel like.
